If you’ve noticed more blue street signs appearing around town, you’re not alone, and there’s a very good reason behind the change. The City of Kyle’s Transportation & Public Works (TPW) Department has begun transitioning from older red and dark blue street signs to a new white-on-blue design as part of an ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and remain compliant with state and local laws.

The primary driver behind this change is compliance and visibility. The new blue signs use retroreflective materials, making them significantly easier to see and read, especially at night or in low-light conditions. Compared to the older red and dark blue signs, the white-on-blue design reflects headlights more effectively, helping drivers identify street names sooner and navigate more safely.
In addition to improving safety, the new signage aligns with current national traffic control standards outlined in the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) and Standard Highway Sign Designs for Texas (SHSD). By replacing street name signs, the City is ensuring roadways remain consistent, compliant, and safe for all users.
Rather than replacing every sign at once, the City is taking a practical, cost-effective approach. As existing signs reach the end of their useful life or require replacement, they are upgraded to the new blue design. This phased strategy allows the City to manage costs while steadily enhancing the overall condition and safety of street signage.
Looking ahead, all new developments within the City are now required to install white-on-blue signs, ensuring compliance and consistency as Kyle continues to grow. Staff have also explored accelerating replacements in larger sections of the City. However, those options would require additional funding and remain under consideration.
You may also notice a few remaining green signs in certain areas, particularly in parts of the Plum Creek development. These signs were installed under earlier design standards, and while many have been replaced over time, some remain in place today. They will be updated as part of future replacement efforts.
This transition reflects the City’s commitment to safety, efficiency, and thoughtful planning. While the change may seem subtle, it plays an important role in making streets safer and easier to navigate for residents and visitors alike.
