If you’ve noticed crews working around town lately, it’s not just construction, it’s all part of Kyle’s effort to keep our roads smooth, safe, and ready for the long haul. From July 8 through August 8, Viking Construction is leading a microsurfacing project on select roads across Kyle.
Microsurfacing is like a spa treatment for your streets. It’s a preventative maintenance method that, when applied before the major wear and tear, can help extend the life of blacktop roads and keep them in tip-top shape. This preservation of the surface is key to keeping the streets in great condition and helps avoid the cost and disruption of a full reconstruction later.
This effort is part of a larger, long-term strategy to maintain a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of 82.5 or higher on city streets. PCI scores are calculated based on visual inspections and condition surveys, which assess things like cracking, potholes, rutting, and surface wear. Streets scored above 80 on the PCI scale are considered in excellent condition. Reaching and maintaining that standard takes more than patchwork repairs, it takes smart planning, regular upkeep, and community cooperation.
This summer work will focus on neighborhoods across both the East and West sides of Kyle, with Spring Branch, Silverado, and Amberwood topping the list. These roads were carefully selected as part of the pavement study and on-the-ground assessments by our City Engineers and Street Division.
Crews will be out Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and residents in affected areas are asked to move their vehicles before 8 a.m. on your scheduled day.
And here’s the part where we really need your help: once a road is treated, it’ll need a few hours to cure. Driving, biking or walking on the fresh surface too soon can cause damage and leave you with sticky shoes or tires.
These improvements are part of a proactive, citywide approach to infrastructure that supports everything from daily commutes to emergency access. Thank you for your patience, Kyle. Each stretch of fresh pavement is a step toward a stronger, smoother city – one block at a time.
