Nature, Play, and Community Come Together at New Waterleaf Park Playground

Kyle’s new nature-themed Waterleaf Park playground, chosen by the community, brings fresh energy and inclusive fun to one of the city’s favorite parks.

Parks and playgrounds are where community happens—where kids make friends, families spend time together, and neighbors connect. Kyle residents now have a new and improved place to do just that at the new Waterleaf Park playground, which officially opened on October 31 with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new playground replaces the original structure at Waterleaf Park, offering a refreshed and reimagined space built to inspire creativity, movement, and connection. Brought to life by Whirlix Design, it features two play structures. One for ages 2 to 5, and another for ages 5 to 12, to provide safe, fun, and developmentally appropriate play opportunities for children of all stages. There are exciting new features like a zip line, swings, a play tunnel, two slides, and monkey bars, all designed to encourage adventure and discovery.

The entire playground is ADA compliant, ensuring that all children and families, regardless of ability, can safely access and enjoy this space.

What makes this playground so special is how it came to life. From May 5 to May 20, 2025, the City invited residents to participate in a public survey to help shape the design for the new playground. With 305 responses, the community chose the nature play concept—making this space not just a playground, but a shared vision that reflects the natural beauty of the area and the voices of the people who call Kyle home.

The playground is part of a broader vision to enhance Waterleaf Park and make it more connected, accessible, and sustainable for years to come. Planned conservation efforts include:

  • Improvements to the wildflower meadow on the North side of Waterleaf Park
  • Enhancing native plant diversity and pollinator habits
  • Expanding no-mow zones throughout the park to support conservation, water savings, and wildlife habitat restoration while reducing maintenance costs.

Planned infrastructure improvements include:

  • Installing an additional Green Flush restroom at the Bunton Reserve crossing of Plum Creek
  • 1.57 miles of the new Vybe Trail, which will open new opportunities for walking, running, and cycling, set for construction in 2026
  • Investing in a new parking lot, which will include 63 total parking spots, including ADA stalls, with new asphalt pavement and a 7-foot sidewalk for improved safety and accessibility.

The new Waterleaf Park playground isn’t just a place to play, it’s a reflection of the community’s shared vision. With this upgrade, Waterleaf Park continues to grow right alongside the families who love it most.
