Following a traffic and speed study, the Kyle City Council approved an ordinance establishing a 40 mph speed limit on Marketplace Avenue from Burleson Street to Kohlers Crossing.
The change creates a consistent posted speed limit along much of the 2.2-mile corridor, where speeds previously varied between 30 and 45 mph. The existing 30 mph speed limit between the southbound I-35 frontage road and Burleson Street will remain in place.
The change comes after the completion of the Marketplace Avenue Extension, which opened to traffic in August 2025 and connected two previously separated sections of the roadway. With the corridor now providing a continuous route between FM 1626 and Kohlers Crossing, City staff conducted a study to evaluate traffic speeds along the full length of Marketplace Avenue.
The City collected 24-hour traffic and speed data at five locations along the corridor in March 2026. Vehicle speeds were measured in both directions to determine the 85th percentile speed, or the speed at or below which 85% of vehicles travel on a particular roadway segment.
The study found that some portions of Marketplace Avenue, particularly between Burleson Street and City Lights and between Old Bridge Trail and Kohlers Crossing, had 85th percentile speeds exceeding the posted speed limits.
The new 40 mph speed limit is intended to simplify the corridor and provide a more consistent expectation for drivers traveling between Burleson Street and Kohlers Crossing.
As Marketplace Avenue continues to become part of the daily commute for residents traveling between FM 1626, Kohlers Crossing, nearby neighborhoods and businesses, the updated speed limit is designed to make one part of the drive a little easier to follow.
The new signs are already in place and residents are encouraged to follow posted limits when traveling along Marketplace Avenue.
