After months of hard work, the new Kyle Senior Community Center (KSCC) is getting closer to opening, but before that happens, it’s time to address a safety concern that exists a few dozen feet from the front door – the driveway on Dacy Lane.
Earlier this year, the driveway was evaluated for intersection sight distance (ISD) and stopping sight distance (SSD) using criteria from national and state roadway design standards. Ravali Kosaraju, Assistant Director, Traffic & Transportation Management and the City’s traffic engineer, explained, “Drivers on Dacy Lane have enough visibility to see a vehicle exiting the driveway and stop if needed. The concern is for people leaving the site. To make turns from the driveway onto Dacy Lane, they do not have the minimum required sight distance.”
In other words, people leaving the Kyle Senior Community Center cannot safely get out with the current traffic pattern. The way the land sits next to the driveway blocks part of that view, making it harder to judge when it is safe to turn out of the driveway.
Because this new facility will serve many of Kyle’s seniors and community members, we want the traffic pattern to be clear before the doors open. The goal is to make the driveway easier to navigate and reduce the chance of a risky turn out of the driveway.
Here’s how it will work:
To do that, vehicles leaving the Kyle Senior Community Center will be limited to right turns only. That’s right, a dedicated exit lane will be provided to allow drivers to safely turn right and merge onto the main road from the driveway, giving them space to build up speed before entering traffic. This means the two lanes of traffic heading north from Bunton Creek Road will be reduced to a single travel lane through this section of Dacy.
Drivers leaving the KSCC who need to head south will make the turn right out of the driveway, continue to Dacy Loop, and circle back. It adds a small extra step, but it avoids the most difficult turn at the driveway.
The City will also update the traffic pattern on Dacy Lane with new pavement markings, signs, and flexible posts. The yellow striping will help guide drivers through the area, and the orange dots on the exhibit show where the flexi-posts will be placed. The plan also creates a clearer receiving lane for vehicles turning right out of the center before merging on to Dacy Lane.
We know this is a little less direct for some drivers. For a facility that will soon welcome Kyle’s seniors and residents, it is a practical step to make trips in and out safer and easier to understand.
