Observed annually during the second week of April, National Telecommunicators Week highlights the critical, often unseen work of 911 dispatchers and communication specialists who serve as the first point of contact in moments of crisis. These professionals are the calm voice on the other end of the line, providing life-saving assistance, coordinating emergency response, and ensuring officers have the information they need to act quickly and safely.
In 2025 alone, Kyle telecommunicators handled more than 42,000 calls for service. This included 25,067 community-initiated calls, 17,000 officer-initiated calls, and 480 broadcasts. As call volumes continue to increase each year, the team consistently meets the demand with professionalism, accuracy, and speed.
One of the most critical performance measures in emergency communications is response time. In 2026, Kyle telecommunicators have achieved an average answering time of just 3.96 seconds for both 911 and non-emergency calls. This is significantly faster than the national recommended standard of 15 seconds. In fact, 99.84% of all calls were answered in under 15 seconds, with 100% answered within 20 seconds.
“These seconds matter and their performance directly contributes to lives being saved and emergencies being managed effectively,” said Kyle Police Chief Dr. Jeff Barnett.
In addition to managing emergency calls, Kyle’s emergency communications team continues to enhance public safety through innovation. Last year marked an important step forward with the development of the Real Time Crime Center, which provides real-time intelligence and analytical support to patrol officers, investigations, and critical incident response.
This capability strengthens situational awareness in the field and improves the department’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to evolving situations.

The Kyle Police Department’s Emergency Communications Division includes a highly trained team of professionals dedicated to serving the community 24/7. The division consists of four lead telecommunication operators, 11 full-time operators, two part-time operators, two real time crime analysts who are also licensed telecommunicators, as well as a communications compliance coordinator, supervisor, and manager.
Together, this team ensures that every call is answered, every detail is captured, and every response is coordinated with care and precision.
As National Telecommunicators Week continues, the City of Kyle encourages residents to join in recognizing and thanking the individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the community safe.
