On Monday, June 1 the Kyle Police Department officially launched its first-ever K‑9 program, marking a significant step forward in its efforts to enhance public safety and strengthen community engagement.
The program debuts with K‑9 Atlas, a Malinois/German Shepherd mix, and his handler, Officer McClaran, who have recently completed extensive professional training. The pair is certified in narcotics detection and search operations, equipping the department with specialized capabilities to locate missing persons and assist in removing illegal drugs from the community.
“This is an exciting time for the Kyle Police Department and our community,” Kyle Police Chief Dr. Jeff Barnett said. “The K‑9 program reflects our continued dedication to incorporating resources that keep everyone safe while building stronger bonds with the community.”
K‑9 units are widely regarded as valuable assets in law enforcement, offering enhanced support during emergencies and investigations through their unique training and skill sets. Officials say Atlas will play a key role in strengthening response efforts and improving outcomes in critical situations.
The department also plans to introduce Atlas and Officer McClaran to residents through upcoming community events and demonstrations, giving the public an opportunity to see the team in action and learn more about the new program.
