Steeplechase Park could soon see major upgrades following a $750,000 matching grant application submitted by the Parks Planning team, with matching funds provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
The improvements aim to make the park more connected, more welcoming, and better equipped for the growing Kyle community.
If awarded, the grant will help fund several major projects:
- The Vybe Trail Expansion: Transforming the existing 0.6-mile, 6-foot-wide concrete path into a 12-foot-wide shared-use trail, improving accessibility for walkers, runners, cyclists and strollers while connecting more areas of the park.
- Disc Golf Course Upgrade: Realigning fairways to improve play, reduce safety hazards and avoid overlap with new conservation zones.
- Pollinator Habitat Creation: Establishing an American Bumblebee habitat along Plum Creek with native plants, nesting features and educational signage.
- Multi-Use Sports Courts: Adding space for pickleball, futsal and other court sports to meet growing demand for popular athletic activities.
“These improvements aren’t just about adding new amenities, they’re about creating a space where every member of our community feels welcome, active and connected,” said Parks and Recreation Director David Lopez. “From better trails to pollinator habitats, we’re making Steeplechase Park a place Kyle can be proud of for generations to come.”
The upgrades align with top priorities outlined in the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan, including expanded trail networks and adding pickleball courts — two of the most requested amenities by residents. Both projects reflect top community priorities for accessible and modernized recreation.
Short-term benefits of these projects would include increased daily park use through better connectivity, improved lighting, and accessible entry points. New amenities would also open the door to expanded community programming, such as adaptive recreation events, disc golf tournaments, and guided nature walks.
Beyond recreation, the project is designed to foster environmental stewardship. Restored habitats and pollinator gardens will attract butterflies and bees, stabilize soil, and create learning opportunities through interpretive signs. Volunteer groups will also have new ways to get involved through habitat planting and park cleanups.
In the long term, the improvements will tie into other ongoing upgrades at Steeplechase Park like the new playground, parking lot renovations, and phased ball field improvements. Together, these efforts aim to transform the park into a welcoming, resilient hub for community life.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Local Park Grant Program operates as a matching grant, meaning the city will contribute an equal amount to any awarded funds. Award announcements are expected in January 2026.
