For those of you that frequent the Kohlers Crossing East to West corridor, you’ve likely noticed some big changes in the last couple of weeks and days.
The right lane of westbound traffic has been reduced to one lane between FM 1626 and Benner Road and the Kohlers Crossing and Kyle Crossing intersection is currently operating as a stop sign. So let’s get into what’s going on and what happened.

On Monday, September 21 the westbound lane of Kohlers Crossing between FM 1626 and Benner Road was closed to support a water infrastructure project.
A 24-inch water transmission line is being installed that runs from the FM 1626 take point (the big tanks to the north side of the bridge over the train tracks) to the water well at the corner of Benner Road and Kohlers Crossing, just below the La Verde water tower.

Once complete, this project will supply additional water from the FM 1626 Pump Station to the previously mentioned well site, enhancing the City’s overall water system and supporting pressure planes that ensure water is delivered at a consistent and reliable pressure across the community.
At times, access to Cromwell Drive, Everett Street, Burnham, and Benner Road may be impacted but access to the Brick and Mortar district including the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center, Sprouts and other nearby businesses will be maintained.
Long-term projects like these can understandably be difficult to navigate, which is why we want to make sure residents are aware why they are needed.
The road closure is expected to last through December 2026. We appreciate residents’ patience as we work to strengthen our city’s water system reliability and support the future needs of Kyle.

Kohlers Crossing and Kyle Crossing Intersection:
In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 26 a vehicle took out the recently installed traffic signals.
Fortunately no one was hurt during this incident. Unfortunately, the intersection will operate as a four-way stop until staff are able to secure temporary traffic lights.
Staff are working diligently to get these measures in place, as we know the Kohlers Crossing and Kyle Crossing intersection is already one of the most challenging areas for drivers in Kyle.
Thanks to the Kyle Police Department, we were able to identify the owner of the vehicle and are working through the procurement process to get reimbursed for the damage and get the signals repaired as quickly as possible.
We strongly encourage drivers to operate cautiously at the intersection until temporary signals are put in place. When able, we will provide a more concrete timeline as to when permanent signals are back in action. Additionally, we want to thank our Transportation and Public Works crews and Kyle Police Department for cleaning the intersection after the incident, getting temporary stop signs in place, and making it safe for Kyle motorists.
