On Tuesday, March 31, Kyle’s boards and commissions came together for a night of recognition and celebration. The annual Boards and Commissions Appreciation Dinner highlighted the incredible residents who volunteer their time and expertise to help guide city decisions across everything from parks and planning to public programs and community services.
These volunteers are the backbone of our local government, offering thoughtful input and helping shape the future of Kyle. If you’ve ever wanted to get more involved in your community, serving on one of Kyle’s advisory groups is a great way to make an impact.
What Are Boards, Commissions, and Committees?
Boards, commissions, and committees are made up of residents appointed by the City Council to provide recommendations on a variety of topics. While boards and commissions are typically ongoing advisory bodies, committees are often formed to focus on specific projects, initiatives, or short-term needs.
Together, these groups review projects, discuss policies, and provide valuable input that helps inform City Council decisions. They also give community members a direct voice in local government and offer a meaningful way to get involved in shaping Kyle’s future.

Meet Kyle’s Boards, Commissions, and Committees
Kyle has a wide variety of boards, commissions, and committees, each serving a unique purpose:
- Arts and Cultural Board – Advises City Council on arts activities, events, projects, and how public and private arts‑related funds may be used to benefit residents.
- Board of Adjustment/Sign Control Board – Responsible for hearing and determining appeals regarding the refusal of building permits, appeals resulting from administrative decisions, and can permit an exception to, or variation from, the zoning regulations.
- Board on Aging – Provides advice to Council on services, programs, and needs affecting older adults in Kyle.
- Civil Service Commission – Oversees fair procedures for police civil service eligibility exams, promotions, certifications, and appeals.
- Council Compensation Committee – Reviews and recommends compensation levels for City Council members (council‑established committee typically with short‑term assignments).
- Economic Development and Tourism Board – Studies and recommends strategies that promote local economic development and tourism efforts on behalf of the city.
- Ethics Commission – Ensures confidence in the integrity of city government by applying the city’s ethics code to complaints, advisory opinions, and education.
- Impact Fee Advisory Committee – Advises Council on the use and applicability of impact fees charged for new development.
- Kyle Area Youth Advisory Council (KAYAC) – Brings together teen residents to offer a youth perspective on community issues and events.
- Kyle Housing Authority – Oversees affordable housing policies and programs within the city’s jurisdiction.
- The Housing Authority is not a city board or commission, though state statute requires the mayor to appoint board members. Those members then provide oversight of the housing authority.
- Library Board – Advises on library policies, services, and community outreach for the Kyle Public Library.
- Parks and Recreation Board – Provides guidance on parks planning, recreational programs, and community activities.
- Planning and Zoning Commission – Reviews development proposals, zoning changes, and long‑range planning matters.
- Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) Boards – Works to enhance public improvements and attract high‑quality development in designated TIRZ areas.
- Train Depot Board – Advises on use, preservation, or programming related to the historic Kyle Train Depot.
All of these boards, commissions, and committees serve in an advisory capacity to City Council, offering feedback, recommendations, and perspectives on city programs, services, planning, and policy. Kyle’s government relies on these volunteer contributions to help ensure decisions reflect community values and needs.
