DON’T BLOCK THE BOX! New Signs Coming to Key Kyle Intersections

A simple choice behind the wheel can make a big difference in keeping traffic moving.
Traffic lights and three road signs: “Center St”, “Don’t Block the Box”, and “Left Turn Yield on Green” against a clear blue sky in Kyle, TX.

The next time you’re approaching a busy intersection, and let’s be honest, Kyle has quite a few, remember: If you can’t clear it, don’t enter it!

To improve traffic flow, keep emergency vehicles moving, and reduce congestion the City is installing new “Don’t Block the Box” signs at several intersections throughout Kyle. These signs remind drivers to wait behind the stop line or crosswalk until there is enough space on the other side of the intersection to safely drive through.

We know there’s nothing worse than getting stuck at a red light for another cycle, except maybe being the driver stranded in the middle of the intersection making awkward eye contact with everyone you’re blocking. Beyond making yourself the literal center of attention, there are serious safety and mobility concerns that come with blocking an intersection, including:

  • Difficulty for emergency vehicles navigating traffic
  • Reduced visibility for pedestrians crossing the street
  • Greater potential for crashes and near misses
  • Increased congestion

Simply put – if you’re blocking the box, you’re not stuck in traffic, you are traffic, and you’re violating state law.

As Kyle continues to grow, small actions by individual drivers can have significant impacts on our shared transportation network. Taking the time to wait for enough space to clear an intersection helps keep vehicles, first responders, pedestrians, and cyclists moving safely and efficiently.

The first few signs have already been put in place, most notably at the Burleson and Center Street intersection. Residents should expect to see additional signs at other key intersections in the coming weeks.

Beyond keeping the zone clear, as always, we ask that all Kyle drivers stay focused behind the wheel, obey traffic signals, and pack your patience during those heavy traffic periods.
