One of Kyle’s most dedicated group of volunteers just won a Texas-sized award for their great work with our Police Department and service to the community.
Kyle’s Citizens on Patrol (COP) team, a group of ten volunteers with the Kyle Police Department, has been named Organization of the Year (mid-size cities category) by Texas Citizens on Patrol Association (TCOPA). The award recognizes the team’s collaboration with the police department and commitment to serving the Kyle community.
“This award highlights the great work this group has contributed, not only to our department but to our entire community,” said Kyle Police Chief Dr. Jeff Barnett. “We are grateful for their collaboration and ongoing dedication to the safety of Kyle.”
Kyle residents may recognize the group not only by their distinguished marked vehicles and uniforms, complete with their signature cowboy hat, but also by their smiling faces, helpful demeanor, and frequent presence at many City of Kyle events.
COP volunteers collectively invest hundreds of hours each year, assisting the department with directing traffic, patrolling neighborhoods and shopping centers, and participating in community events among other duties as assigned by the Kyle Police Department.
“Upon joining the Kyle COP I was moved by the dedication and hard work being done by every COP member. This award represents that dedication and the commitment of the Kyle COP to the community and to the Kyle Police Department,” commented COP member, C. Buckner.
The COP program, initiated in 2020, is a reflection of the police department’s ongoing commitment to community policing practices and strengthening the relationships between officers and residents to enhance public safety, and keep Kyle a safe city for all.

Members of the C.O.P. program are alumni of the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) who underwent additional advanced C.O.P. training to learn how to direct traffic, patrol neighborhoods, and generally assist in serving the residents of Kyle.
Residents interested in participating in Citizens on Patrol program must first complete the Citizens Police Academy which is designed for adult community members who either reside in the City of Kyle or who own a business within the City. The academy is 10-weeks long, plus a graduation.
The Kyle Police Department is currently accepting interested applicants for the Citizens’ Police Academy. The next course begins on September 11, 2025.
