City of Kyle Invests in Future Water Security with Aquifer Storage and Recovery Project

The City of Kyle is launching its first Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project, a major step in implementing the Water Master Plan. The ASR project will help develop a sustainable underground system to store surplus water during low-use months and recover it during peak demand, like in the summer.
A tall water tower labeled "City of Kyle, Texas" stands amid a suburban neighborhood with rows of houses, roads, trees, and construction equipment at its base.

At the June 3, 2025, City Council meeting, the Kyle City Council approved a contract with STV Infrastructure, Inc. to kick off the City’s first Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project—an exciting step forward in Kyle’s long-term water planning. ASR works like a water savings account: extra water is stored underground during cooler, low-use months and pulled back out when demand spikes in the summer. This helps Kyle stretch its current water resources without needing more annual water allocations.

“This is a smart, sustainable move for our city,” said Kyle Water Utilities Director Mike Murphy. “ASR is key to meeting future water needs without overextending our supply.”

Phase 1 of the project—expected to take about 7 months—will include site studies, feasibility analysis, and permitting. After that, Phase 2 will drill deeper with test wells and detailed planning to see just how much water we can store. Eventually, Kyle aims to store more than 2 million gallons a day underground, giving us a reliable backup to meet growing demand for years to come.
