Big things are moving in Kyle. After a successful summer of expert care and attention, the Old Stagecoach Tree is just about ready to move to its new home, a Pocket Park a quarter mile northwest of its current location.
Beginning Monday, November 3, a stretch of Old Stagecoach Road (details below) will temporarily close as crews begin to carefully relocate the live oak. The decision to move the tree was made in July 2025 after collaborative public discussion, reflecting the community’s passion for preserving Kyle’s heritage and the City’s commitment to moving forward responsibly with voter-approved road bond projects.
Preserving the tree comes with challenges but after lengthy discussion and full consideration of all options, relocation offered the most balanced and cost-effective path forward. This approach protects the tree, creates a new public gathering space, and keeps vital, voter-approved road bond improvements on track.
The relocation process, managed by Texas-based EDI, an industry leader in large tree transplantation, began with a 100-day pretreatment process that included soil, moisture, and pest management, canopy pruning to reduce limb stress, and checking underground conditions to ensure the root zone is healthy.

The new location, a nearby pocket park, offers a safer long-term home with similar soil conditions and public access so residents can continue to visit and enjoy the tree. The park is currently in the design phase. During the Tuesday, October 21 City Council meeting, the Parks Department presented early inspiration, design, and site plans. Next, more feedback will be gathered to include in the final design. The park is slated to be completed in the Fall of 2026 following a successful bid, award, and construction process.
Once road closures are in place, portions of Old Stagecoach Road will carefully be removed, dirt will move, crews will excavate the area surrounding the root ball and cranes will slowly raise the tree and move it a quarter of a mile northwest of the existing location.
During this process, the following temporary traffic detours will be in place along Old Stagecoach Road during the following dates:
November 3 – Mid-January 2026
- Closure: Old Stagecoach Road closed from Cypress Forest Drive to Three Forks Drive.
- Detour Route: Cypress Forest Drive to Allegheny Way to Cold River Run to Three Forks Drive.
Expanded closures slated for December 8 – December 20
- Closure: Old Stagecoach Road closed from Cypress Forest Drive to 6 Creeks Blvd.
- Detour Route: Cypress Forest Drive to Allegheny Way to Cold River Run to Rio Blanco Way to Six Creeks Boulevard.

After transplantation, the Old Stagecoach Tree enters recovery mode, a 24-month aftercare plan that we need your help with. Protecting the root zone is incredibly important; gatherings and foot fall underneath the tree could affect transplantation success. We ask that everyone respect the boundaries around the live oak, ensuring that its shade endures for generations to come.
