Center Street has been part of Kyle’s story for generations, connecting neighborhoods, schools, downtown and some of the city’s historic places. This June it begins to enter its latest stage.
As part of Kyle’s voter approved 2022 Road Bond Program, construction is moving forward on major improvements to Center Street from Old Stagecoach Road to Veterans Drive, including widening the center lane, and sidewalks on both sides. At this time, a new single-lane roundabout is planned to replace the current five-way, all-way stop.
A ‘Notice to Proceed’ has been issued for Monday, June 22, giving the all-clear for work to get underway, meaning Kyle residents may begin seeing active construction and utility relocation in the area this month.
This project focuses on the western section of Center Street, where the road connects Old Stagecoach Road, nearby neighborhoods, Wallace Middle School and Veterans Drive.
What Is Included
Between Old Stagecoach Road and Veterans Drive, Center Street will stay one lane in each direction with a center turn lane. The project will widen parts of the road, add curb and gutter to improve drainage, add lighting, and place sidewalks on both sides of the road; with one being a shared-used path for people walking or biking.
The sidewalk and safety improvements are especially important near Wallace Middle School, where students, families, buses and nearby residents all use this part of Center Street.
What Residents Can Expect
The first work residents are likely to see is utility relocation. That means crews may move or adjust utility lines before road construction begins.
As work picks up, drivers and pedestrians should expect crews, equipment, changing traffic patterns and occasional delays. Temporary detours or alternate routes may also be needed at times, depending on the type of work taking place.
We know that can be frustrating, especially for people who live nearby, rely on Center Street for daily travel, work in the area or have students at Wallace Middle School.
Access to homes and properties is expected to remain available during construction, though some driveways may have temporary changes while crews are working nearby. In some cases, the way residents reach a home or property may temporarily change.
Because this work is near Wallace Middle School, school traffic is part of the construction planning. As students return in the fall, drivers should plan for possible delays during drop-off and pickup times. Temporary detours, alternate routes or different phases of work may affect how drivers reach the school and nearby neighborhoods.
Pedestrian routes may also shift during construction. Please follow posted signs and avoid walking through active work areas.

How This Fits With Old Stagecoach Road
The Center Street work is also part of a larger set of improvements around Old Stagecoach Road.
From the intersection of Center Street and Old Stagecoach Road, future improvements will continue north along Old Stagecoach Road where it intersects with Veterans Drive/RM 150 and Jack C. Hays Trail. The City is moving these improvements forward in separate pieces, but they are connected and are intended to improve safety and traffic flow.

What About the Rest of Center Street?
There is also a separate but related Center Street project planned for the east section of Center Street, between Veterans Drive and Main Street in old downtown Kyle.
That part of Center Street is on the TxDOT system, as it is technically a section of RM 150, which means it requires additional review and coordination with TxDOT.
As of June 2026, design on the Veterans Drive-to-Main Street section is 55% complete, with the next major design review scheduled for September. That future section is planned to widen the road, with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane, add drainage, utilities, sidewalks and improved pedestrian crossings. A traffic signal is also planned at Center Street and Veterans Drive, along with dedicated turn lanes at Center Street and Burleson. Other 2022 Road Bond Projects and the Way Forward
We are entering a busy phase for the 2022 Road Bond Program.
With Center Street moving into construction, five of the original road bond projects are now either actively under construction or completed, with several more expected to break ground soon.
“That means better connections, more traffic capacity and improved mobility for Kyle. It also means we are entering a period of detours, construction zones, periodic closures and general lessons in traffic patience,” said Mike Trimble, Director of Transportation and Public Works. “It has taken time to move many of these voter-approved road bond projects through planning, approvals and contracts, but this year everyone is going to start seeing more of these projects reach the construction phase.”
